The 17-rod soroban abacus is a Japanese-style calculation tool that helps students represent numbers and practise arithmetic by moving beads along vertical rods.

The abacus contains 17 rods, also called columns. Each rod has one upper bead and four lower beads separated by a central counting bar. This arrangement allows learners to represent the digits from zero to nine on each rod.

Moving the beads gives students a physical and visual way to understand numbers. Instead of memorising mathematical rules alone, learners can observe how quantities, place values and calculations are connected.

This product is sometimes described as a 17-digit abacus. Technically, “17-rod” or “17-column” is the more accurate term because the frame contains 17 vertical calculation rods.

Understanding the Soroban Layout

Every rod on the soroban represents one place value. A learner can select a reference rod for the ones place. The rods towards its left can then represent tens, hundreds, thousands and larger values.

Each rod contains:

  • One upper bead: It represents a value of five when moved towards the central counting bar.
  • Four lower beads: Each lower bead represents a value of one when moved towards the central counting bar.

Only the beads touching the central bar are counted. Beads positioned away from the bar are inactive and do not contribute to the displayed value.

How Are Numbers Represented?

The digits from zero to nine can be represented on a single rod:

  • Zero: No beads are touching the central bar.
  • One to four: Move the required number of lower beads towards the bar.
  • Five: Move the upper bead towards the bar.
  • Six to nine: Move the upper bead and the required number of lower beads towards the bar.

For example, the number eight is represented by moving the upper bead towards the bar for five and three lower beads towards the bar for three. Together, they represent eight.

How to Set the Soroban to Zero

  1. Place the abacus horizontally on a stable surface.
  2. Move every upper bead away from the central bar.
  3. Move all four lower beads on every rod away from the central bar.
  4. Check all 17 rods before starting a calculation.

When no beads are touching the central bar, the abacus is displaying zero.

How to Use the 17-Rod Soroban Abacus

  1. Set all the beads to zero.
  2. Select a reference rod for the ones place.
  3. Use the rods towards the left for tens, hundreds and thousands.
  4. Move lower beads upwards towards the central bar to represent values from one to four.
